Adventures in the Magical Forest

Description

Adventures in the Magical Forest is game I made as an assignment for Jesse Schell's Game Design class in Spring of 2009. The assignment was to create a game of any kind, freestyle.

The focus of the game was to embark in a mission filled with puzzles and adventure in order to defeat an evil boss.

Made for single player.

How it came to be

The way I designed this concept was to make an adventure game, resembling the puzzle/adventure games or SCUMM modeled games both Daniel and I grew up with, such as Indiana Jones, Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion. For this we decided that our best engine to apply our design is the Lassie Adventure Studio, which is a SCUMM modeled game creation platform built with Adobe Flash.

the base art we used for this was thanks to Daniel Cook of
lostgarden.com. With his prototyping art we were able to make tis game as none of us was able to make artwork for this project.

In this game players go through text options that not only give the characters they play a personality, but also give them cues as to how to proceed in puzzles and encounters. That was the key for this adventure to be a success, that the interface molded itself to the game in order to help it grow as an experience and be a mechanic itself.
